St. Egwad's Church

View of the Church Tower taken from the southwest

John Ball photographed the Church on a visit to Llanfynydd in February 2003. It is with his kind permission that his photographs are reproduced here.

St Egwad's Church dominates this small attractive village. The southern part of the church, and possibly the tower, date back to the 13th century, while the northern part was added in the 15th century. The church boasts an unusual sunken chancel and a fine wooden roof, as shown in the following photos.

The unusual sunken chancel

The unusual sunken chancel is thought to be due to the floor of the body of the church being raised by burials over the course of many centuries. Photo: David Worsley.
